Stars-Predators Postgame Quotes

Here are some quotes following Tuesday’s Dallas Stars-Nashville Predators game which the Predators won 5-2. These quotes are provided by Dallas Stars PR.

Stars Head Coach Ken Hitchcock

On the team’s performance tonight:

“I think, when you watch them play, they’ve had experience. When you play a game that’s, for us, a measuring stick – we wanted to take the next step – I think you look at them and from the goalie out, their best players were their best players. Their defensemen they count on were their best players. Their forwards played well. It’s what you need to win. For us it was disappointing and how we deal with it is up to us. It’s disappointing but now what are we going to do about it? For me, it’s a lesson learned but for a measuring standpoint I’m not sure it was a 5-2 hockey game. We had a lot of scoring chances. I don’t think Nashville played that well and I think they showed the effects of yesterday but when we give them the big push in the second period when it’s 1-0 and we’ve got all the scoring chances, that’s a disappointing goal to go in. It’s disappointing for everybody. That seemed to give them the air that they were able to breathe a little bit because we were on top of them pretty hard. Still, in saying that, you need your top players to be your top players. If you’re playing good teams, that’s the measuring stick. How did your top guys do and how did their top guys do, that’s the fun part.”

On the Stars handling the pressure:

“I don’t think it had anything to do with pressure. This is the third time we’ve been in this type of scheduling conflict and for whatever reason we did not handle it well. We had no energy this morning and we had less tonight. I’m not sure why, it’s something we’re going to have to think about. We did not handle it well at all. Still, in saying that, we had 45 shots on goal and a ton of scoring chances. 21 shots in the second period but the people you count on, you’ve got to count on. That’s just the way it is. First we need to flush it out with a hockey practice tomorrow and then get ready to play. We’re disappointed. I’m sure individually some guys are disappointed.”

Stars Defenseman John Klingberg
On the team’s performance:

“I think the start of the game was pretty good pace. Penalty there, they scored on the power play, and there were a couple of tough bounces, but we didn’t come back in the game and that’s not like us. I think we had a good pace at the start of the game, but we didn’t win enough battles. Again, a couple of tough bounces and we made some errors in our system after that so, it was a good learning lesson that’s for sure.”

On the shorthanded goal:

“Yeah I haven’t seen it yet. It exploded off my stick, but I didn’t really feel it off my stick, I felt it on my shin pad. I didn’t know where the puck was and had to chase it back and it got away.”

On tonight’s loss:

“It’s tough, but every game is a new game and we have a new game against the division opponent here in St. Louis so it’ll be good for us to get back on it.”

Stars Captain Jamie Benn

On the team’s performance tonight:

“We had a tough night. It started with myself; probably a bad penalty and then they scored on the power play. We just didn’t have it tonight.”

On the five-game winning streak coming to an end:

“Like I said, we just didn’t have it tonight and we’re going to move on.”

On the importance to bounce back against St. Louis on Thursday:

“It’s huge. We get right back at it and look to bring that effort on the road.”

Predators Head Coach Peter Laviolette

On tonight’s game:

“Early on, especially in the first period, I thought the chances were pretty tight both ways. We knew we needed to do that coming in here with their firepower. I thought we played a good road game, a good road first period. Once it got to 3-0, 4-0, I thought we were loose but overall we played well.”

On the play of Juuse Saros:

“He was excellent. He was excellent. He made some great saves. It’s unfortunate that last one went in on the redirect. We could have walked away with 40 shots and only one goal performance. That’s pretty impressive.”

On playing in back-to-backs:

“It wasn’t perfect. They have a lot of firepower and kept pushing and getting pucks at the net. Juuse Saros was really good and we did enough damage in the first 27 minutes to get a good lead. I thought we stood back a little too much after that. Maybe from playing last night and getting in late, but we’ll take the win and move on.”

Predators Goaltender Juuse Saros

On getting a win tonight:

Yeah, of course it is always nice to see a lot of pucks and face a lot of shots. Especially, when our defense is playing good in front of me, and most of the shots come from the outside. So, yeah, it was a good win for us.”

On being able to see all the shots:

“Yeah, like I said, big thanks to our defense, for that they always make the goalies’ work easier, so that is important.”

On the three-goal stretch in the second period:

I think it just showed that if we stick together, like they tried to come hard in the second and challenge a couple of fights, we were not scared about that. I think it showed character for our team.”

Predators Defensemen Mattias Ekholm

On how the team is playing as of late:

Yeah, I think we are finding our stride. We had some early lessons in the year with some tough losses and we needed to learn and move on. I think the whole team has done that and obviously the addition of Kyle [Turris] has helped us a lot, too. We get that depth at the center position, even when Ryan goes down tonight, we still have four really good centermen that can step in and do the work. We have a lot of fun coming to the rink, and right now I am thinking we are playing pretty good and getting the win, so that is the most important thing.”

On the goaltending tonight:

“I agree, Juuse [Saros] was good. But, as I mentioned earlier with the shots they got, they got more quantity, not quality and they got them from the outside. If we can keep them tonight, we know we have two good goalies that are going to stop them and I thought we did a good job. “
