Stars-Coyotes Postgame Quotes

Here are some quotes following Thursday’s Dallas Stars-Arizona Coyotes game which the Stars won 5-4. These quotes are provided by Coyotes PR.

STARS HEAD COACH KEN HITCHCOCK

On tonight’s game: “I really liked how our big boys played tonight. Our top players carried the day and that’s what you need if you’re going to win on the road. I thought Bishop was good in goal, I thought Klingberg was excellent on the back end and obviously Seguin’s line was outstanding, so the right players who needed to come through did it for us and that’s what we needed to take down the road.”

On what changed after the second: “Well we had a conversation, but you know they took it upon themselves. They want to win. They are turning a leaf right now- they’re turning the corner, they dug in deep today. They deserve the two points, that’s a good sign. We had our top players come through for us which is even a better sign and the other thing for me is, we had a lot of fight in this because that was a spunky team we played this series and we had a lot of fight in this which is a great sign.”

On the Coyotes scoring: “What they did is they scored in the zone. They didn’t score off the rush. All their offense this season until tonight has been off the rush, but today they got on the grind and stayed on the grind and when they are like that, and they are willing to work for their chances they are pretty dynamic. That’s exactly what they did.”

STARS FORWARD TYLER SEGUIN

On tonight’s game: “A road game and we got two points, that’s how we are leaving here.  We knew it was going to be greasy in the early road games in this league to start the season, it’s almost like playoff hockey until everyone in the league is settled in and no one is settled in yet.  Sloppy game at times but we found a way to win so we’ll take it.”

On playing differently under Hitchcock: “I think in our line we have shown some flashes of it, but we need to be more consistent.  We are getting three around the puck a little bit more; we get spread out too much.  Tonight was better, Jamie (Jamie Benn) really got it from the first shift, he was going hard tonight.  First period for Radj (Alexander Radulov) and I wasn’t that great and I think the second period is when we came around, still a couple turnovers by us and that third period we really came around.  We need to put a 60-minute effort in as far as coming to the puck and working together.  So when we can do that, as you saw in the third period, no teams can really touch us, so we got to do that more.”

On Ben Bishop: “He’s doing his job and beyond.  We have the utmost confidence with him out there; he’s been great, he’s a great leader in the locker room as well even though he’s a goalie.  Good things as far as Bish (Ben Bishop) so far.”

COYOTES HEAD COACH RICK TOCCHET

On tonight’s game: “Well, it wasn’t enough. I thought we played well enough to win. A couple of tough luck goals. The guys played hard. I asked all week for them to keep their energy and practice hard and they did. Other than the results these guys played hard tonight. The Seguin line was a killer, those guys are talented guys. They are elite players. Our top line produced for us.”

On the Coyotes top line building chemistry quickly: “Yeah, you know, Clayton (Forward Clayton Keller) is what a 19 or 20 year old and he is going against Jamie Benn. He’s a hell of a player. This is a learning process and Clayton delivered, he did a nice job. Thought Stepan played well)… It was a good line for us.”

On the Coyotes play on the first or second shift after the Coyotes score a goal: “Well I think when the team puts pressure, we have worked on that. We are looking for that subtle play. I think a couple times we get it and we just throw it away. That play when you can make that short, nice little pass. I think on the two goals they got we threw it away right in the slot. Teach them to handle the pressure, to have your heart rate down and you got to make that play. That is why we practice it. This is a learning process. You are going to have to have guys in that situation again and again. We are going to keep putting Dvorak out there in those situations and he will be fine.”

COYOTES FORWARD CLAYTON KELLER

On not playing consistent: “It’s all in our heads. We just want to get it in deep and have a good shift and sometimes it doesn’t work out that way and you end up in your own zone and it’s just what happens sometimes.”

On his line’s play: “I think we played a good game. We can get better in our own zone, I think I can definitely get better at coverage and getting pucks out. I think it’s just been the same for us, our the offense will take care of itself.”

COYOTES FORWARD DEREK STEPAN

On not being able to get a win: “I feel so confident in this group that they have good things to come. We’ve been working so hard and we haven’t took any steps backwards, which says a lot. There’s good things that are coming with this group and we just got to find a way to outscore the other team one time, and just kind of relieve the pressure of not getting a win.”

On the team’s resiliency: “We haven’t taken any steps backward. We come to the rink and work extremely hard. You can see in the game, our game is starting to be more of the picture Tocchet wants, and more of the sixty-minute hockey. The other team on the ice is going to score some goals, but you know I thought we did some really good things tonight.”
