Top 10 Stars prospects according to The Hockey News

Among the items worth noting in The Hockey News Yearbook is the ranking of prospects for all NHL teams. THN does a good job keeping up with prospects, putting out a Future Watch edition in the spring with prospect rankings and then coming up with a new list in the yearbook to include the latest draft picks.

As for the latest rankings, no surprise that defenseman Miro Heiskanen is the new No. 1 prospect for the Stars. He was the third overall pick in this summer’s draft. He and two other 2017 picks – goalie Jake Oettinger (26th overall) and forward Jason Robertson (39th overall) – also made THN’s latest list of the team’s top 10 prospects.

So did Valeri Nichushkin. I don’t consider him a prospect. He’s got 166 NHL games under his belt and I wouldn’t reclassify him as a prospect just because he didn’t re-sign with the Stars and went back to the KHL. But it’s THN’s list and they can do what they want.

That said, here is how The Hockey News ranks the Dallas prospects. On a side note, defensemen Niklas Hansson and Joseph Cecconi and forward Rhett Gardner were bumped from THN’s previous list to make room for Heiskanen, Oettinger and Robertson.
