Here are quotes from GM Jim Nill on veteran forward R.J. Umberger getting a tryout in training camp with the Stars and Valeri Nichushkin staying in Russia another season.
On the 35-year-old Umberger, who didn’t play last season but will get a shot with the Stars in camp. Umberger last played with Philadelphia in 2015-16 and the Flyers bought out the final year of his contract last summer. Umberger has 779 games of NHL experience and has a history with Stars coach Ken Hitchcock.
Nill: “Hitch knows him from Columbus. He called Ken and said he feels he still has something in him. He’s healthy finally. We’re open to that. We’re about more competition in camp and let’s see where he is at.”
On Nichushkin, who will play out the second and final year of his KHL contract with CSKA Moscow in the KHL. Nichushkin is expected to return to the Stars in 2018-19.
Nill: “He’s staying in Russia. I talked to Val, he had a commitment and he knew that going in. He talked to the team, and he knew he had to go back one more year. I had a good talk with him and told him you’re going to playing in all the national team tournaments and get a chance to make the Olympics. Take advantage of it. It’s a great year of development for him. He’s excited about that. And then he comes back the following year.”
